“About all you can do in life is be who you are. Some people will love you for you. Most will love you for what you can do for them, and some won’t like you at all” – Rita Mae Brown
It can be hard to find our own identity when society is constantly dictating who we should be, moulding us like Play Doh into mindless robots. There is a lot of pressure to do what everyone else is doing, to “follow the social norm” .
In school, I had a bad habit of wanting to be like everyone else. To be like my friends, even to be like those who weren’t my friends. It was my way of fitting in, being apart of the group… it was the fear of being an outsider. I would look and behave in certain ways just to be accepted. But around the time of leaving school, I decided I no longer wanted to conform to what was described as “Socially Acceptable”, I pulled away and searched for my own identity.
We cannot be put off by what society might think of us. Sometimes it’s necessary to break away from what is expected of us in order to succeed in life. Life can be more thrilling when you dare to be different. I recently read an article, that made an interesting point. It said, just because everyone is facing forwards in an elevator, doesn’t mean you have to as well. I thought this was a great way to look at the how society controls even the littlest of things. Sure you may get some strange looks sometimes, but as long as what you’re doing doesn’t affect anyone else and you’re remaining within your moral foundations, then what’s the harm? Be different, be original, be you.
Don’t let anyone tell you your dreams are a waste of time. Maybe you didn’t achieve the best in school to make it as a doctor or a lawyer, but that doesn’t mean it’s all over for you. Richard Branson wasn’t academically successful, in fact his school’s headmaster said he would either wind up in prison or become a millionaire. Now look at him. Don’t be another brick in the wall. Be as creative and innovative as you can and stand out from the crowd. Don’t conform to society because society says so. Stand the wrong way in the elevator… Eat with your knife and fork in the wrong hands, just to piss society off!
You were born to stand out.
